Multinational manufacturer Procter & Gamble, whose products ranges include personal care and household cleaning products, as well as laundry detergents and prescription drugs have hit the headlines by recalling 120,000 bottles of its Vicks Sinex nasal spray after traces of bacteria were found in the product.

According to reports, the infected bottles had been dispatched by the Ohio-based company to locations across the US, the UK and Germany, but were recalled after traces of the B cepacia bacteria were found at a German plant in Gross Gerau.

Stocks

The recall is a big blow to the company, who only hours before the news broke had been revelling in the fact that share prices of Proctor & Gamble Health and Hygiene had risen, despite a weak market. Dealers said that a speculation of a bonus announcement has been driving activity in these counters.

Now, according to the consumer products giant, despite no illnesses having been reported, the recall marks a precautionary measure as the bacteria could affect consumers with lung problems. P&G added that those who have the medication should no longer use it.

Serious infection

According to a press release by the firm, "the bacteria could cause serious infections for individuals with a compromised immune system, or those with chronic lung conditions, such as cystic fibrosis."

The firm went on to announce the numbers of the individual lots that had been recalled. In the UK, for instance, that lot is 9224028832 of Vicks Sinex Micromist Aqueous Nasal Spray solution in 15ml bottles. P&G also provided concerned consumers with a helpline to phone in on, if they feel they own one of the infected bottles.
