Outsourcing

These days European pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies face severe pressures across a wide spectrum of issues – patent expirations, intense competition from US and Asia, increasing R&D costs and insufficient product pipelines. As a result, over the last years the trend for outsourcing has become more widely accepted by European drug companies as a means of freeing up funds and increasing operational flexibility and overall performance. However recent reports suggest that the industry has not fully exploited the potential that outsourcing represents. There is still a lot of confusion when it comes to understanding the particular advantages and challenges associated with offshoring as well as which functions to outsource and how to select an optimal outsourcing partner.

“Outsourcing offers multiple benefits for pharmaceutical companies. It can help reduce costs, achieve consistently higher levels of performance, free up resources for higher value activities and gain access to capabilities and resources that are not available internally,” – says Philip George, Partner at Accenture’s Health & Life Sciences practice, writing in NGP EU. Companies can very successfully outsource their secondary core functions such as clinical trials, manufacturing and sales as well as non-core functions including IT and human resources. The move towards a fully integrated outsourcing model will thus help European pharmaceutical companies to strengthen their operations, improve R&D and manufacturing efficiencies and increase market presence and shareholders’ value.

Next Generation Pharmaceutical features strategic content from the leading experts to aid European pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry with their strategic outsourcing, drug development, clinical R&D and manufacturing decisions.
