BIB-BOB module cuts throughput times by up to 30%
The heart of the concept is a logistics module – the BIB-BOB module, which takes the blister automatically from a packaging line (BIB mode) and stacks it neatly in a bulk hopper. These blisters can be fed back at a later time into the cartoning system (BOB mode). The BIB-BOB module is mobile, so it can be linked quickly and simply to different blister machines, cartoning systems or even complete packaging lines. The resulting flexibility means, for example, that very small, country-specific packaging lots can be combined on the blister machine, substantially reducing downtime due to changeovers. Several simulations based on benchmark data have shown that when the LSC concept is implemented, the overall line efficiency of pharmaceutical packaging operations increases by 15 to 25%, depending on the spread of lot sizes.
Guaranteed pharmaceutical security
On customer demand, MediSeal supplied a new security concept for Late Stage Customisation; it is based on a 2D matrix code as a unique identification feature and guarantees pharmaceutical security even when production processes are decoupled. The unprinted blisters are provided in the packaging machine with a 2D matrix code, which identifies the batch and the product. The blisters are uniquely identified by this code. The blisters can now be stored in any location and packaged at a later point in time. Additional identification features, such as an RSS code or print applied by an inline printer can also be incorporated at the customer’s request
Unique identification by code
After the blisters are fed back into the cartoning machine the previously applied
code is read and clearly identified; in a subsequent stage, the specific country
and product details are printed. Pharmaceutical security is guaranteed by applying
the identification feature in the blister machine, by verification and by the
ejection of defective blisters from the cartoning machine. “Thanks to
our new security concept, we can guarantee flexible packaging according to the
latest safety standards,” says Gerhard Breu, CEO. “Decoupling the
production and packaging processes gives our customers a high degree of flexibility
in the case of small lot sizes whilst ensuring high machine running times. Not
to mention a valuable contribution to pharmaceutical security.”
About MediSeal
MediSeal is one of the market leaders worldwide for blister machines, edge-sealing sachet machines and cartoners. MediSeal is also known for the flexibility and no-compromise quality of its systems and for its focus on customers’ requirements.
The MediSeal company, formerly Klöckner Medipak, is an internationally active company specialising in the development, design and manufacture of thermoforming, sachet sealing machines, cartoning machines and complete packaging lines for the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industry. For more than 70 years, Mediseal has acquired outstanding know-how in both dosaging and packaging of solids, powders and other paste products. The key feature of all systems and solutions is always the stringent requirements for pharmaceutical safety, as well as leading-edge technology and economy.
An extensive range of machines
For many years, MediSeal has concentrated on modern servo technology in its blister machine (thermoforming machine) division, guaranteeing a flexible yet economical system concept. Customers can tailor their system to their own requirements and at the same time benefit from the flexibility of being able to optimize it in the future.
In the area of edge-seal sachet machines, MediSeal supplies machines which are acknowledged world-wide as the leaders for packaging pharmaceutical and cosmetic products in sachets: The machines package liquid and high-viscosity products, powders, tissues, contoured sachets or sachets for magazine advertising. Flexible cartoning machines, which are offered either as stand-alone systems or in a line with blister machines, complete the range. The product range is technologically integrated: future developments can always be incorporated into existing systems. MediSeal’s central concerns are always flexibility, reliability and economy.
The goal: integrated packaging solutions
There is hardly any other branch of industry which imposes such stringent requirements in terms of technology and know-how on its partners as the pharma industry. In order to be able to serve customers and supply integrated packaging solutions, MediSeal, Dividella AG (Grabs, Switzerland) and Rondo (Allschwil, Switzerland) have been integrated into the KÖRBER MEDIPAK Group. The Group is the world’s first single-source provider of pharma packaging systems – from packaging development through supply of materials to complete machinery and systems applications. Rondo is one of the leading manufacturers of standard and special paperboard packs for the pharmaceutical industry. Dividella is responsible for the development and manufacture of machines for fully automated packaging of parenteral pharma products. The pharmaceuticals division of Hamburg’s Körber Group employs a total of 530 people and achieves annual sales of approximately 85 million euros.
